I don’t think I’ve ever seen her wearing a dress before. Love her. “I have neither the discipline nor the desire to turn into someone else.” via NYTimes.
I love San Francisco!
When boyfriend and I were in San Francisco last week, it happened to be Fleet Week. We flew into SFO ahead of Jeanne’s wedding, picked up our ferry tickets to Napa at Pier 39, and had a few hours to kill before our boat came in. We ate Dungeness crabs [...]
The Cat Piano
This animated piece is really gorgeous, a little Moulin Rouge-y, a little Doctor Seuss-y, a little bad slam-poetry-y, but you should all know by now that I could all sit around staring at purty images and listening to just about anything come out of Nick Cave’s mouth and be delighted.
City Dance Party!! (arrgh.)
When I arrived home today, it was to the sight of DJ equipment being set up in front of City Hall, which is pretty much the front yard of Cambridge. There was a big sign announcing the “City Dance Party” tonight. My first thought was “oh, crap.” Luckily, the fabulous [...]
Girls who rock
Imagine you’re a teenage girl, and you want to be a rock god: who are your role models? Who’s there to look up to? Who can you respect?

Too fat to be a rock star?
The Dresden Dolls have been sort of on the fringes of my life for a good seven or eight years. And I’ve developed a sort of tacit hometown loyalty. So even though I’m not the huge fan that so many people see the potential for me to be, I was pretty sickened when this news item came across feministing.com today.
For the Love of Music
If you would like to see a giant painting that I made out of oil pastels, acrylic, inks, spackle, sand, spray paint, glitter, magazine clippings, embossing powder, and plastic toy solders), come to the Middle East before September 6th.
VOICES CARRY: An evening of songwriters and spoken word.
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month; this benefit show will not be an outpouring of grief. The Spence, Cann, and Powers families are immensely grateful for the support and love that they have received from the community in the weeks following this tragedy.
A Digression
Taking a break from the design of the new site. Yes, my final project for class is due this Thursday. And yes, I took off yesterday to play pseudo-hostess at Jamie’s party. Actually, this isn’t quite accurate: I spent the entire morning wresting with the html and framesets and with attempting to make .ai files open in either my powerbook or my pc without actually having Illustrator installed on either computer.
My Dejected Man of Genius
I love Jarvis Cocker. Not in an “I want to shag him wildly and repeatedly” way. I love him in an “I want to give him a big long hug, make him eat something substantial, and clean his glasses if they’re smeary and also to push them up if they slide down his nose” way.
Unmusical me?
So, this summer, I’m going to try to learn how to play the accordion. Or maybe just concertina. That sounds completely silly, right? Even to me. Maybe I’ve just been listening to too much Nick Cave and PJ Harvey and Ute Lemper and Judy Henske lately. Maybe I have too soft a spot for Tom Waits and the Klezmatics and One Ring Zero.
