Design Geek Review: The Rejected

Last week's episode of Mad Men—like the premiere—didn't really merit a Design Geek Review. It wasn't terribly fabulous, visually or otherwise. (I'm bored of the suburbs.) However, yesterday's was wow! So here are some things that set this Design Geek's heart racing last night: 1.&2. 3. 4.&5… Continue reading

Design Geek Review: Mad Men

design geek

Three things that made me happy this Sunday:

  1. Helvetica poster!
  2. Artist's maquette in Peggy's office!
  3. Underwood typewriter ad framed above Allison's desk!

all that is wrong in the universe

While this "pink turd" (to borrow and slightly tweak Gruber's lovely turn of phrase) is truly, truly hideous, it actually is pretty much on par with the kind of clueless-about-half-the-species sort of whiz kids who named the iPad. Just my two thoughts on an item at digitaldaily.com

things that I bought that I love, part 3

So, I've had this fascination with Pantone ever since I saw my first swatch book. I was completely blown away by this very concise set of colors that could universally be identically reproduced by any printer, anywhere in the world, and how infinite the selection felt. This was during my first job out of college, and oh! I wanted to take the samples with me when… Continue reading

built with Processing

This semester I'm studying Processing, a Java-ish programming language developed by and for visual artists. I churned out a couple of sketches last week, but this is my first interactive piece in the language. I'm really having fun in code; I'm learning; I'm absorbing the algorithms by osmosis, and just really, really happy with the class. When the professor described our assignments as like creative writing exercises, and

resolution

The last time I made a New Year's resolution was at least a decade ago, and I think I resolved myself against New Year's resolutions. Kind of like giving up Catholicism for Lent. Anyway, this year, inspired by unclutterer.com, nubbytwiglet.com, and my paid-off credit cards, and abetted by the Harvard semester leaving me class-free for a whole month, I'm embarking on a huge project to purge my… Continue reading

process work

I'm slightly obsessed with seeing work-in-progress. I was lucky enough this morning to stumble across a draft of a lasting brilliant piece of design work that transcends into art. Every designer need reminding that nothing comes from wholecloth, and that every iconic image is the work of actual human hands. Process, process, process. Note that hundreds of sketches preceded this one. Amazing. I love this… Continue reading

clickthrough-averse

One of my hugest webdesign/usability pet peeves is galleries or slideshows. I just don't want to have to hit the NEXT arrow 14 times to learn ten pieces of information, or to see twelve pretty pictures. If your click-per rate and my patience have a showdown, I'm closing the tab. Luckily, it's not always strictly necessary:

  1. Keep Calm and Carry On poster. Typographically and visually stunning, these were designed by the British Ministry of Information in 1939, to be distributed in the event of a German invasion on English soil. Only 50 were printed, and they were never hung. I love the message, and believe everyone should live by it.
  2. Jewish Rosaries by Carlen Altman. My Catholic and Jewish grandmothers would

impossible. cool.

I'm now learning the proper terms for things I knew by rote or instinct. I'm learning to appraise images in an entirely different way, or at least to articulate what I'm seeing differently. Continue reading

First official Imaginarium trailer

I have been waiting years for this movie. Because I'm a Gilliam-obsessive, and because Tom Waits plays the Devil. Heath Ledger died in the middle of filming it, but because it takes place across multiple dimensions or otherworldly realms—and because his character wears a mask each time he travels between them—Gilliam was able to cast a different actor in the role of Tony in each world. And he managed… Continue reading

a developing pet peeve

I'm pretty sure I'll never like (or have any desire to watch) any movie branded with the handwritten building-block font. By which I mean: Juno, Nick & Norah, Away We Go, etc. In terms of dull ubiquity, it's the (wannabe)indie-(wannabe)cool version of Papyrus. It's the typographical equivalent of the MPDG. time enough at last

I'm terrifically excited about the end of this semester and my time being my own again. There's just SO MUCH STUFF that's fun that I can't wait to start digging into. First, I need to do something about my website and blog. Every year or so I get bored of the design of my website, and this year I have a very special idea about folding them together Continue reading

yes, I want this too, please

So, with this being a recession and all, I suppose imaginary shopping is the best way to go when it comes to luxury goods. In which case I'd shell out the big nonexistent bucks for one of these conjunctive lovelies: A deluxe carrying case for an ampersand, designed by Marc Johns. Continue reading
