We will be revisting these ideas in near-future posts:
"Inspiration is that unexpected moment of discovery when the mind leaps to a new place triggered by something interesting. That something interesting can be a thing you’ve read, or seen on the street, or in a book or gallery, or a piece of music, or something really great or something really awful. For me it is often unrelated… Continue reading
Welcome to New England: the mercury flirts with single digits, and us hardy folk are faced with the challenge of dressing to bounce between warm bed, icy winds, overheated public transportation, frigid dashes across streets where drivers interpret red lights as the merest of suggestions. And who knows whether our offices will be saunas or fridges. Layering is the greatest weapon in our adaptive arsenal.
Here's how I cope… Continue reading
One of my hugest webdesign/usability pet peeves is galleries or slideshows. I just don't want to have to hit the NEXT arrow 14 times to learn ten pieces of information, or to see twelve pretty pictures. If your click-per rate and my patience have a showdown, I'm closing the tab.
Luckily, it's not always strictly necessary:

- Keep Calm and Carry On poster. Typographically and visually stunning, these were designed by the British Ministry of Information in 1939, to be distributed in the event of a German invasion on English soil. Only 50 were printed, and they were never hung. I love the message, and believe everyone should live by it.

- Jewish Rosaries by Carlen Altman. My Catholic and Jewish grandmothers would
For me, baking is incredibly experimental, with room for great flexibility. When people ask me where I learned this, I simply tell them that "I grew up in my mother's kitchen." Continue reading

I'm in New Hampshire right now, assisting with preparations for my sister's wedding shower.
And I present to you reason number 87 why I will never, ever consent to get married in a long white gown. Continue reading
I discovered this Marge Piercy poem on a friend's facebook page. I agree. There's nothing inherently wrong with workshopping, of course; honest feedback from one's peers is always the best thing for any creative type. But in a classroom setting it can be stifling, particularly if you get a bad instructor in the mix. Continue reading
My sister is a huge proponent of eating an-orange-a-day (and I think it's usually more than just one!). She considers them the perfect food, and has even blogged about the proper way to eat them.My favorite food, especially when I feel a cold coming on, is Odwalla Superfood (although I insist on calling it "Green Monster." My boyfriend knows what I'm talking about, and that's all that really… Continue reading
Tis the time of year when people start making best of/my favorite things/holiday must-have lists. I've been plotting a post like this for a few years—or at least since I discovered Mindy Kaling's Things I Bought that I Love blog a while back (an idea that I'm jealous I didn't think of first).
So, this list is of the top ten items that I literally could not survive without—setting… Continue reading
The last time my brother came down to the city, I got a text at 11pm inviting me to meet him at the Purple Shamrock, or some other similarly godawful Quincy Market student-tourist date-rapey cattlecar pit. I actually went. I spent 40 minutes waiting in a line outside before giving up. I spent most of that time texting him to leave and come with me to Lucky's Lounge, a… Continue reading

Select the far-right tab, Labs.Scroll down and enable "Google Calendar gadget." (I also added the Google Docs gadget and the Mark As Read Button.) Presto! You have your calendar floating in the left-hand nav of your Gmail! Since it's pretty much guaranteed

In any event, the same rules apply when buying gift certificates as when buying gifts: you have to know the person you're getting something for. Be observant and inquisitive. You need to discover their tastes, their likes, their needs and wants. Continue reading
Given the amount of snow Boston has received in the past week, more predicted snowfall, and my lifetime of New England living—including seven winters in a major metropolitan area—here's some sound advice, primarily for drivers and pedestrians in Boston, for surviving the rest of the winter. Here's a good place to start: Arts & Letters Daily. Each day, two or three new articles appear on the top of each column. If you read nothing else, ever, you will be a well up-to-speed news- and culturewise only reading this once a day. Continue reading
Sunday afternoon, I found myself at one of my favorite intersections in Boston: Boylston and Newbury, right by Copley Square. The weather was all wrong for being there, but I had a long-overdue appointment to match my winter-bleh to my summer-golden haircolor, and my salon is directly across from the Public Library. Athena Salon, formerly Linea Aveda. Continue reading
