design geek – bloomingdale’s holiday 2010 catalog

Taking a bit of inspiration from Nubby Twiglet’s recurring The Typofiles feature, this first post-Mad Men edition of Design Geek focuses on “found” typographic design. It also owes a bit to Nubby’s blog; I began receiving the Bloomingdale’s catalog shortly after ordering a wallet from their online store after first [...]

all that is wrong in the universe

all that is wrong in the universe

While this “pink turd” (to borrow and slightly tweak Gruber‘s lovely turn of phrase) is truly, truly hideous, it actually is pretty much on par with the kind of clueless-about-half-the-species sort of whiz kids who named the iPad. Just my two thoughts on an item at digitaldaily.com

process work

process work

I’m slightly obsessed with seeing work-in-progress. I was lucky enough this morning to stumble across a draft of a lasting brilliant piece of design work that transcends into art. a developing pet peeve

a developing pet peeve

I’m pretty sure I’ll never like (or have any desire to watch) any movie branded with the handwritten building-block font. By which I mean: Juno, Nick & Norah, Away We Go, etc. In terms of dull ubiquity, it’s the (wannabe)indie-(wannabe)cool version of Papyrus. It’s the typographical equivalent of the MPDG.

Heh.

Heh.

I’m on an email list for a wonderful little local desserterie in Boston called Finale. Today, I got one of their occasional blast messages, and it gave me a good giggle. Scan the screenshot below, and see if you can spot what so amused the hell out of me. So, [...]

8 things that need to go away in 2009

In the spirit of my recent “Things that I bought that I love” tribute post, and with a nod to Arianna Huffington’s “Bye-Bye 2008: Things I Want to Forget,” here’s a list of things which all sane and rational humans should resolve to avoid in this young year. Some are altruistic, some are practical, some tongue-in-cheek. But I’m deadly serious about them all.
