“Posit” is a verb.

“Posit design” is an imperative statement. It asks you to consider design as a foundational principle (a “first principle” in philosophy-speak), and all of its possibilities and permutations.

I was an undergraduate philosophy major. “To posit” was probably my favorite philosophical term. It encompasses both tossing out an idea, and taking that idea as a jumping-off point for serious exploration; it’s flexible and engaging. More exactly, it means:

  1. To put in position; to set or situate; to place.
  2. To accept as fact or as a basis for argument; to postulate; to affirm the existence of.
  3. To be reliant on or upon as a basis.

I also majored in creative writing, with a focus on writing poetry, and love wordplay of all kinds—bad puns included. In the context of what I do—positioning graphical elements on a page, positioning brands and ideas in a positive light—the word’s connotations and denotations simply ring true.
