Super-quick Oscar wrapup

So, here’s where we’ve been:

Best Actor in a Leading Role: Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Heath Ledger, Dark Knight
Best Actress in a Leading Role: Kate Winslet, The Reader
Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Taraji P. Henson, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Best Animated Feature Film: Wall-E
Achievement in Art Direction: Changeling
Achievement in Cinematography: Slumdog Millionaire

And here’s what’s left:
I’m ignoring the short and music categories. Because I just don’t care that much.

Achievement in Costume Design: Revolutionary Road. (Or The Duchess)
Best Director: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire (Or Milk. The chance to give that wacky genius Gus Van Sant a long-overdue Oscar could pull out an upset here.)
Best Documentary Feature: This will almost certainly go to Man on Wire but really should go to Trouble the Water.
Achievement in Film Editing: Slumdog Millionaire
Best Foreign Language Film: Waltz With Bashir
Achievement in Makeup: Dark Knight
Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire. (Or Milk. Prop 8 could possibly pull out an upset here.)
Achievement in Sound Editing: Dark Knight
Achievement in Sound Mixing: Slumdog Millionaire
Achievement in Visual Effects: Dark Knight
Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay): John Patrick Shanley, Doubt
Best Writing (Original Screenplay): Martin McDonagh, In Bruges.

There is a sense in which I almost want the original screenplay gold guy to go to Frozen River just because, female writer, great female roles, but seriously, In Bruges was utterly brilliant. I was totally surprised by this nomination, but it’s totally deserved.

And I promise that Best Picture and Best Director won’t go to the same movie.

Happy red-carpet watching!
