So, last Friday my friend Emmet came over to watch the premiere of Dollhouse. And can I just say—SOOOO GOOD!! God, I forgot how fantastic it is to have fresh Joss on television. There are just some things that every season of Buffy on DVD can’t fulfill. I mean, I grew up with Buffy: she was a year ahead of me in high school. My high school was hellish; hers was on a Hellmouth. She was under constant attack by vicious creatures who delighted in tormenting her; I was under constant attack by a vicious bully who delighted in tormenting me. She only had two nerdy friends in the whole world; ditto me. So, Joss Whedon and I have been through stuff. He got me through my adolescence intact. And he’s still got it. I missed this; I’d forgotten how it feels to obsess over television.

But the relevance of this to the Oscars is that Emmet, who I implicitly trust as respects narrative since he’s a Joss Whedon fan and a novelist, love-love-loved Doubt. And I really wanted to just ignore Doubt, at least in the acting categories. But Emmet said that the film is driven by this intense charged conflict between Meryl Streep and Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s incredibly powerful performances. I think I’m still going to stick with my earlier picks, though. And P.S.—Nate Silver and his magic predicting machine totally agrees with me so far!

And for animated film, obviously Wall-E. Although if Waltz With Bashir had earned a nomination in this category, it would have been interesting in here for a change.
