(the third in a series—see intro post for details) I’m bored and left cold by this entire roundup. If Kate Winslet had been nominated for Revolutionary Road, we could all congratulate her and be done with it. And I’m on the record as disliking Kate Winslet. First up, though, is [...]
something else that I love
My sister is a huge proponent of eating an-orange-a-day (and I think it’s usually more than just one!). She considers them the perfect food, and has even blogged about the proper way to eat them. My favorite food, especially when I feel a cold coming on, is Odwalla Superfood (although [...]
Best Actor in a Supporting Role
Maybe I should subtitle this: “The Canonization of Heath Ledger.”
It’s not quite fair. If he were alive, I think he’d still be nominated. I think he’d still probably win. He gave one of the most objectively mind-blowing, history-of-cinema-altering, entirely revelatory performances ever delivered, and did so in a big-budget popcorn summer blockbuster action movie.
Best Actress in a Supporting Role
So far, I’ve been just setting Doubt to one side, and sticking a pin in it, and pretending it doesn’t exist in the Oscar pool; maybe I’ll decide to let the writer/director collect something, and not bother with any of the performances.
Best Actor in a Leading Role
Here’s the first installment in my pick-the-Oscar-winners challenge. Our nominees are: Richard Jenkins, The Visitor; Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon; Sean Penn, Milk; Brad Pitt, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button; and Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler.
Best boyfriend ever.
I did a lot of housecleaning this week. This morning, I had the following conversation with my boy. Me: I see these giant spiderwebs all over the house, but I’ve never seen a single spider. It’s so weird. Boy: [offhandedly] I’ve seen spiders.
Oscar season again: A gauntlet.
Two years ago, I wrote a fairly comprehensive running commentary on the 2006 Academy Awards nominations. This year, I’ve been fortunate to have access to Academy screeners and have seen over a dozen nominated movies.
It’s a good new year.
I’m so glad I used a fraction of my zillion hours of banked time-off to extend the holiday into the Inauguration; this was just a fantastic weekend. I’ve been invited to put some art in a ladies’-only Valentine’s Day themed show at All Asia next month; more on that closer [...]
Final Project
Completed my final animation project on Friday. You can see it right here; just make sure to have the volume turned up on your computer. The animation was done in Maya, which is the same software that Pixar uses! I mixed the audio in Audacity, and did all of the post-production work in FinalCut Pro.
Awesome.
This may be both the coolest and nerdiest video I’ve seen in a while. (I love that they’ve included punctuation!) These are totally the kids who were too uncoordinated to be on the flag squad, but it doesn’t even matter; they bring giddy geek grace.
8 things that need to go away in 2009
In the spirit of my recent “Things that I bought that I love” tribute post, and with a nod to Arianna Huffington’s “Bye-Bye 2008: Things I Want to Forget,” here’s a list of things which all sane and rational humans should resolve to avoid in this young year. Some are altruistic, some are practical, some tongue-in-cheek. But I’m deadly serious about them all.
30 Movies
Salon.com just came out with a list: 30 Movies to See Before You’re 30. Basically the argument is that you cannot be a functional American without having watched these movies. I’m a huge fan of old movies, and consider myself extraordinarily cinema-literate. But when my boyfriend and I started dating, [...]
Two Perfect Weeks, part ii
I you want the full story of our west-coast adventures, start reading here, or you will be hopelessly lost. The next day, Sunday, was our last full day in Los Angeles. Cristo’s sister and brother-in-law went househunting in the early afternoon, so we watched their Oscar screener of Revolutionary Road, [...]
Two Perfect Weeks, part i
On Christmas Eve, Cristo and I flew to Los Angeles. It was a little more fun than our last trip because, while there was no celebrity-studded Kodak Theatre wedding this time, it was much less scheduled; our only responsibility was occasional childcare. We had access to his sister’s car, and I passed the Clueless LA freeway driving test with ease. It almost made me miss having a car.
