Why Republicans should vote for Barack Obama

I was raised to be a political conservative. I was brought up in the austere Irish Catholicism of my father, and he brought me to Town Hall to register me as a Republican on my 18th birthday. Although I am probably a bit to the left of the Democratic party with which I am registered as a voter and I respectfully disagree with GOP politics, I have nothing but the very utmost respect for his Republican ideals.

The problem is that the Republican party has utterly lost those values along the way.

So I’m going to begin a small thought-experiment. Over the next month, I’m going to examine the tenets that the Republican party ostensibly stands for—national security, family values, small government, fiscal responsibility and robust economic competition—and attempt to demonstrate why responsible Republican voters who cherish any of these principles must vote for Barack Obama in this coming election.

A lot of Republicans will be doing just that come November. There’s even a website, republicansforobama.org. The conservative magazine The Nation defines “so-called ‘Obamicans’ [as] throwbacks to the days of traditional Republicanism [who] are disgusted by the Bush Administration’s militant foreign policy, reckless spending and cronyism at home, and America’s plummeting reputation in the world.”
