Sorry to break up the Big Five (or six), but I went into this planning to work in order according to the official nominations list, and I’m sticking to it.
It’s sort of lovely, like finding a super-easy question buried in your calc final with four minutes left of class. Cartoons! I’ve only watched one animated movie this year. It was Over the Hedge, and it was fun. Mostly because I went over to Jme’s and watched with him and his roomie. It sort of perfectly blended parent and kid humors. Really cute. Quite smart.
This is an easy category, not just because of the CARTOONS! factor, but because two looked incredibly bad, and one looks awesome. Cars has a phenomenal cast, but that’s all it has. Monster House has that bratty wink-wink pandering to preteens, and is probably not fully parent-approved.
But let’s pause for Happy Feet. It has Robin Williams voicing two or three characters. It’s the only one of the three for which (even someone as out-of-the-loop as) I could provide plot-points. It’s got penguins (and who doesn’t ? penguins? Penguins = Oscar, right?). I’m fairly certain it is the only one of the three to feature musical numbers. It’s got life-lessons and heartwarming. And, come Sunday night, it’s going to have an Oscar.
