Best Films I Never Saw in 2006

Call it regret, but yuck. Call it a list of what I resolve to Netflix in the coming months—just don’t call me out, because these films can be as perfect as I want them to be, because I haven’t seen them yet.

  1. Shortbus. JCM’s followup to Hedwig. It’s not porn.
  2. Venus. Peter O’Toole—Need I say more? Very well, then. EW says that “The best way to age well is to have such great infrastructure that the years melt away everything but your handsome facial bones. That’s Peter O’Toole in Venus. At moments, he looks like he just levitated off a slab, yet he makes decay beautiful—you can fall in love with his weary gaze and still-noble cheekbones, with the withered smile that can’t decide whether it’s glowing or dying. …That’s the magic—or is it just the fab trick?—of the O’Toole twinkle.” I will cry mournfully, moronically, when this criminally Oscarless legend (and owner of the most stunningly beautiful pair of eyes ever to open on this earth) dies.
  3. The Fountain. This will be the second-prettiest movie of the year. I’ve adored Ms. Weisz since Enemy at the Gate, and have wanted to see this since the October 2006 issue of Premiere magazine landed on my doorstep.
  4. Volver. Almodóvar….yum! I’ve been rather in awe of Ms. Cruz since Sin noticias de Dios…has anyone else noticed she always seems far more sexually charged when acting opposite women than when sharing screentime with male costars?
  5. El Laberinto del Fauno. This is it. The Number One. The most perfect film of 2006. The most beautiful film of 2006. It. Rumour has it the general(ish) release is next Friday. But I’ll be in NYC on Friday, and it’s been playing there for weeks. I’ll probably go all by my lonesome to see it when I should be visiting friends I’ve not seen in 6 or 7 years: that’s how much I must see this movie. del Toro’s latest, and unquestionably greatest. The Froudesque aesthetic of everything I’ve seen BLOWS MY MIND. It’s also the only movie I can ever recall not reading a single negative review of…my newest obsession.
